Gallery

FRANZ JOSEFS KAI 3 is a gallery space in Vienna’s First District. The gallery is situated on the banks of the Donaukanal and offers more than 600 square meters of exhibition space on several levels(ground floor and basement). Generous architectural planning provides excellent presentation and light conditions. Room partitions and two separate street level entrances (Franz Josefs Kai and Wiesingerstraße) permit maximum flexibility.

Newly designed in 2010 by the renowned Vienna architects’ group propeller z, FRANZ JOSEFS KAI 3 has been used for exhibitions by BAWAG P.S.K. Contemporary and quickly established itself as an important address in Vienna’s art scene. It housed, among others, exhibitions of Hans Peter Feldmann, Sonia Leimer, Erik van Lieshout, Clegg & Guttmann, Michaël Borremans, Ragnar Kjartansson, Phyllida Barlow, Monika Grzymala, Katie Paterson and Heidrun Holzfeind, in the course of which the architectural quality of the location and its suitability for exhibition purposes have been met with high praise.

In August 2014 a cooperation agreement was concluded with Universität für angewandte Kunst (Vienna’s School of Applied Arts, „die Angewandte“) for the period of 2014 to 2017. Die Angewandte shall use the space as base for the activities of its brand new Angewandte Innovation Lab, a communication platform for research and transfer of know-how in the areas of art, design, science and technology as well as for exhibitions of alumnae and alumni, faculty members and cooperation partners. Additionally FRANZ JOSEFS KAI 3 will house the Österreichische Biennale Archiv, a dynamic digital archive of Austria’s contributions to Venice’ La Biennale which will include projects in connection with La Biennale. (The Österreichische Biennale Archiv was entrusted to die Angewandte by the government in 2014.)

Parallel to and/or alternating with these activities FRANZ JOSEFS KAI 3 will continue to be open for limited periods of time for high quality independent projects; see project sponsorship.
